Before- over grown, messy, lots of weeds, not at all pretty or friendly

The plan: there is a lot I want to change about the yard's landscaping-things that need to removed, and things I'd like to add. But....I want to give the landscaping a full year to see what blooms. And I need time to plan, research and honestly would rather spend money on furniture right now.
So for this year the plan is simple- weed and trim what is present in the yard, fill in with mulch, and plant annuals, veggies and herbs. Basically, care for what is here but neither add or remove permanent plants.
By 7:00 Sunday evening ("done" for this year)
What's left looks so puny and sad, but neat. Do the two window boxes look tacky/cheap?
I know, not very shapely, but at least they aren't overwhelmingly bushy.
There weren't any extra long boxes, and I didn't feel like taking the time to build any. Inside: 3 different annuals- more photos after they bloom. Each of the front windows has the same "design".
Yup- the clean, simple, pretty, well price Ikea pots at use. I just hope the flowers grow and fill in okay.
By the end of our second day of work all three of us were ready to lay down and chill out.

Smart thinking to wait a year on any drastic decisions, but the clean-up looks fantastic - cannot wait to see what it all grows to be this year!
Looking great! And you're totally being smart by not ripping everything out right away. Sometimes all you need is some extreme clean up.
I think that's smart planning to wait and monitor the yard. And I don't think the window boxes look cheap, they are perfect and add a quaint touch!

I think it looks great. I don't think the two boxes look tacky or cheap. You can always change it next year if it bothers you, but I like it.
Such a good idea to wait to plant things. I totally jumped in too soon, and everything is far too close. I hate it. When we move, I'm planning to dig a lot of the plants up for the new house before listing our house. ;)

You were smart! We tried to plant flowers in the front.. only to have them die and then realize that there were tulips planted there that popped up this Spring! Love the Ikea pots!
P.S. You haven't seen weeds until you have seen our backyard...
